This year, I’m not sure the fifth place film will earn more than $3 million. Last year, every film in the top ten earned more than $3 million. However, last year had a lot better depth. Likewise, this week’s new releases should top last year’s new releases. Thor: Ragnarok should top that by around $10 million. This weekend last year, Doctor Strange led the way with $42.97 million. As I started writing this, there were still no reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. On the other hand, Daddy’s Home 2’s box office potential is moving in the other direction. and that bodes well for its opening this weekend. Murder on the Orient Express had a strong opening in the U.K. Weekend Predictions: Thor Looks to Dominate NewcomersĪfter last week’s debut, Thor: Ragnarok should have no trouble repeating in first place, but we do have two new releases that should be in a battle for second. That makes it the most successful Thor film already, and it seems like it should retain decent traction into the holidays, even with Justice League coming out next weekend. Ragnarok will pass $650 million worldwide today. With another $75.9 million internationally, for a total of $438.5 million overseas, Thor: Ragnarok maintains a firm hold on top spot at the domestic and international box office this weekend, with a respectable decline of 54% at home taking it to $56.6 million for the weekend and $211.6 million to date. It’s Christmas weekend, and, while there are a large number of wide releases, there are not that many limited ones. In the end, I went with I, Daniel Blake: The Criterion Collection as the best of the week. This includes the biggest release of the week, Blade Runner 2049, as well as a limited release, Loving Vincent, and a forgotten film, Matinee. However, this is actually a good thing, as there are several smaller releases that get a chance to shine and there are several Pick of the Week contenders as a result. A sequel was announced while the film was still in theaters. The studio’s share of the box office was about $150 million compared to $55 million for its production budget and likely under $100 million for its combined budget.
Murder on the Orient Express was expected to be a hit however, it beat expectations earning nearly $350 million worldwide.
